Meet The Designer
Jon Dyball, the visionary designer behind Obi, discovered his passion for fashion in the lush landscapes of rural Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. As a child, while others played soccer outdoors, he honed his skills on a sewing machine, setting the stage for a remarkable journey.
“I can’t recall a time when I wasn’t crafting clothing. My first pattern, a pair of shorts, came to life when I was a mere eight years old.”
Under the guidance of his “talented and patient” grandmother, who recognized his budding creativity, Jon acquired expertise in sewing, patternmaking, and cutting, skills that continue to shape his exceptional creations.
“I now cherish my grandmother’s sewing machine, the very one I learned on.”
At 16, realizing that Rotorua offered limited fashion prospects, Jon made his way to Auckland. There, he found employment at a charming family-owned boutique on Ponsonby Road, where he met another influential mentor, Susan of Susie Bear, who illuminated the intricacies of commercial fashion design. Remarkably, at just 17, Jon embarked on crafting bridal and evening wear for discerning clients.
Jon’s path led him to eleven productive years at Working Style Menswear, where he cultivated a love for premium fabrics and excelled in tailoring. After growing weary of “yet another variation of the blue checked shirt,” Jon embarked on a new journey in women’swear a decade ago.
“I relish the artistic liberty that womenswear offers. Once I discovered my niche, I never looked back.”
Jon’s quest for inspiration extends worldwide, yet his heart remains close to home, traversing New Zealand to connect with retailers who have become cherished friends throughout his illustrious career.
